The goose adds resonance and creates a fuller sound. The bag helps with breathing technique and posture. Practice also gets easier, since the pipe bag allows the player to breathe, while still playing. This is a great transition tool, but is also just a great practice tool, for pipers already competent on the pipes. The goose can't be converted to a smallpipe or Highland bagpipe.
